Mac OS X Leopard

leopard_desktop

Since the release of Leopard in October 2007, its been Apple’s most successful OS yet, having sold 2 million copies in the first weekend! Apple has released two Leopard updates, now making it 10.5.2, fixing bugs that weren’t completely fixed after its release. Leopard has 300 new features then previous OS Tiger.

Some of the favorite new features have been

Spaces

Spaces

Spaces allows you to organize your display to show selected windows on different spaces on your Mac. When you enable Spaces you may decide how many columns and rows you want. Above you see two columns and two rows. When you have have Spaces activated you may drag the windows into the different spaces or you can go into a space and drag a window to the left of right of the screen and be transfered over to a different space with the selected window. As you can see, I have iTunes and Yahoo! Messenger in one space and Safari in another. This can be very useful to unclutter your display.

Time Machine

Time Machine

Time Machine is an automatic backup program that comes on all Macs with Leopard. It checks and backups your Mac every hour of the day, a daily backup and a weekly backup until your backup disk is full. To access those backups all you have to do its open up Time Machine.

Quick Look

Quck Look

With Quick Look you can instantly open a document without opening the application that created the document. Just single click on the document and press the spacebar and it opens up. Some of the documents Quick Look works with Video’s (above), PDF’s, Microsoft Office documents / iWork documents, Music and Photos.

Stacks

Stacks

A Stack is a collection of icon that when you click on it, it instantly expands. The above picture is my Applications Stack that houses all my Applications. You may create your own Stacks as easy as dragging a folder into the Dock. You have four options on how you want your stack to open, Fan, Grid (above), List or Automatic. You also have two options on what the stack looks like in the dock, Folder or all the icons stacked on each other (above).

Screen Sharing

Screen Sharing

You may use Screen Sharing over iChat or your home network. Whether you are using it because you need help on something or just looking for a file, it can be very useful!

I personally love this new OS over previous Tiger and would recommend everyone to definitely upgrade if you haven’t done so yet.
